“A library is thought in cold storage” Herbert Samuel
Cold storage is the storage of your electronic data in the cloud through vendors such as Amazon, Google, and Microsoft at a very low monthly cost. The idea behind this is that this data will not be accessed often or maybe never but you still want to keep this data.
Data retrieval and response time can be significantly slower for a cold storage system than for devices or systems designed for active data and media choices often include cloud storage, linear tape file system (LTFS) tape or low-cost commodity hard disk drives.
This data once uploaded will only reside on the vendor’s site and not synchronize locally to a computer at your premise. Additionally, there are certain limitations on the solutions offered that include limited access to the files for download or a charge for downloading the data, but still at a fairly low price.
The term “cold” doesn’t mean it is cold, but rather refers to the storage of items for long periods of time without the need for regular access. You can think of it as a sort of cryogenic hibernation as you see in space movies; you awaken and download the data when it is necessary but in the meanwhile its kept alive in a very efficient way using low shared power and potentially even compressed.
At Mnemonic we will not only help you identify the old stale files but migrate your data to cold storage.
